Leana’s eyebrows shot up. Her features relaxed. She leaned in toward Zach and touched his shoulder. “I appreciate your openness.”
She swiveled to face Vance. “I assume in return you want something?”
“A chance to redeem myself. If my serum works, I ask only that I be allowed to live in Bombay again.”
Leana nodded. “Anything else?”
He hesitated. “I also ask permission to test the serum on myself.”
Leana’s forehead furrowed. Her gaze darted to Eve.
The alpha of the dragons leaned forward. “You realize what you are asking for? The serum may go wrong and leave you incapacitated or worse.”
“A chance I’m willing to take.” He lowered his head, and his gaze dropped to the floor.
Leana shifted in her chair. “What if you end up losing all ability to connect with others on the psychic plane?”
“I understand the risks, Alpha.” Vance raised his gaze. “If something goes wrong, I may not be able to connect to the Sian Web again.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “It would mean my mind is isolated from the collective consciousness and I face an eventual death.”
“Why would you do this?” Leana’s voice was soft.
“The citizens of Bombay are my adopted family.” Vance splayed his hand across his upper chest. “There are many among them who I care for. It’s the least I can do to ensure their safety.”
“I don’t believe in sacrificing one life for the rest.” Leana raised her shoulders then let them drop. “But if your heart is set on it, Vance, then I won’t stand in your way.”
“Agreed,” Eve echoed her.
Zach nodded, then turned to Dora. “Your brother is waiting for you outside.”
Dora rose to her feet with Rage at her side. She took his arm and looked around the faces of those at the table. It struck her that history was being made. For the first time, the three alphas were at one table.
It was the beginning of a new order of things.
“Ready?”
Rage’s velvety voice tugged at her nerve endings. A pulse of longing raced through her. She’d never get used to how attractive her mate was.
A jolt of longing leaped down the mating bond.
She was used to exploring other people’s emotions. For the first time, she had someone who could read her. She sent an answering pulse of need toward Rage.
Dense heat rose from his skin. His jaw tightened.
She twined her fingers through her mate’s.
He rubbed his thumb over her pulse.
Desire coiled low in her belly.
They were so tuned into each other, so responsive to each other’s needs. Things could get very interesting…especially in bed.
She had the rest of her life to find out.

Freya
Her heart pounded and her pulse raced. The hair on the nape of her neck bristled. All her instincts screamed at her to get out of there.
The man's shoes glistened through the foam. His black slacks clung to his powerful thighs, that tapered up to a narrow waist. A white shirt stretched across shoulders that were broad enough to block out the view of the sea behind.
She had to tilt her head right back to look at his face.
His upper lip was thin, his chin thrust out. High cheek bones that looked sharp enough to hurt. His gaze was piercing. The hint of unleashed violence coiled under his skin.
She shivered. This man could be cruel and merciless. He would hurt her.
Rinelle raised her hand and stabbed a finger at the man, "Your eyes look sad."
Freya grabbed the little girl's hand and pulled her close. Her muscles tensed.
The man tilted his head, his forehead furrowed. "Leave little one," His voice was soft.
Very carefully, Freya placed Rinelle on the ground. "Go," She matched her tone to his, speaking at an even keel. She touched Rinelle's shoulder, giving her a gentle shove.
The girl stood for a second longer, her gaze locked with the Elysian man. "Will you return?"
"Perhaps," He let the word hang in the air.
Rinelle took off toward the building where the gathering was still in progress.
The stranger's gaze swiveled back to Freya's face. He stared unblinking. His features could have been carved out of ice.
Freya shifted her weight from leg to leg, pressed her feet into the ground. "Don't you know that the Elysians and the dragons are united? We are no longer enemies."
He eyes narrowed. "I am not Elysian."
A fluttery feeling rose in her belly. "You're not a dragon shifter either." She couldn't explain how, but she just knew.
"I am both." He paused. "And neither" His hands jerked as he drew his elbows closer to his side. It was the first sign of disquiet in the man.
She sensed a grief in him which was at odds with the heartless facade he wore like a cloak. "What do you want?"
The faint sound of the crowd cheering reached them.
The man's eyes flicked in that direction. "Revenge." He leaned forward on the balls of his feet. "They burned Vesta, her body was so disfigured I couldn't recognize my own sister." His voice was harsh. His features could have been carved out of stone, yet his eyes burned with an intensity that twisted her heart. "I won't stop until I am even."
Terror jolted through her. "I won't let you harm my clan." She balled her fists and held it up in front of her chest. Sweat trickled down her spine.
His nostrils flared. It was the only outward sign of his surprise. "What are you offering in return?"
"Me."
